What to Wear: Best Outfits for Bridal/Baby Showers

Holidays/Events

To me, attending a bridal or baby shower is all about wearing something fun, whimsical, and ideal for spring but still appropriate for the occasion.  What do I mean?  Just because the dress you wore out to a bar last week is fun and whimsical, doesn’t mean it’s suitable for a shower.  I’ve been to showers in recent years where ladies younger than me showed up in something I’d consider lounge/club appropriate; not something appropriate to wear in front of your friend’s mom, or worse, dad.  No one needs to see that much boobage at 11am.  Plus, I’m also assuming the event calls for a little more of an outfit than jeans and a nice top.

My first go-to outfits for showers are dresses.  Easy to put on, coordinate, and go.  Typically these events are on a Sunday late morning or early afternoon after you’ve been out late Saturday night.  You’re not in the mood to think about what to wear (not to mention, you’re probably short on time because you tried to catch as many zzz’s as you could), so putting together a comfortable, cute outfit quickly is key.

Take this polka dot ruffle front dress by Kate Spade.  Classic, yet fun.   The bright colors in this floral ruched dress by Mark Shale just make you think of a beautiful garden.  Something about it just brings a smile to my face.  The asymmetrical neckline on this abstract hot pink floral patterned dress gives an otherwise conservative cut dress a little interest.    As they say at Perchance Boutique, how can you go wrong with this coral (a favorite color for spring!) appliqué cut-out dress.  The color is so bright and fun.  And this baby blue floral v-neck dress just reminds me of being somewhere tropical, although I’d recommend wearing a tank underneath as it looks a little low-cut.  If you missed my article earlier this week on Kristin Hassan’s summer 2010 collection, you missed out on her fabulous www.smashingdarling.com/item/vita-wrap-dress” target=”_blank”>tie wrap floral dress and blue floral shirt dress, both of which you can get 25% off on through Monday, April 19th by inputting promo code VIOLET.

Now, some of you may not be dress people, and prefer skirts instead.  Plus skirts are really in this spring, especially the tie-waist kind like this bubble bottom skirt at Akira.  Pair it with this calico print tank for a stylish, modern ensemble.   Another skirt I love is this military inspired navy skirt  paired with this adorable yellow tank.   Tuck the tank into the skirt and let it billow out a little at the waist.  If the tank is too bare, wear a thicker strapped tank underneath or bolero jacket on top.

If you’re the type of person who likes wearing suits to showers or even weddings, try this contemporary light grey suitby Yana, or this lace ruffle trim jacket adds a feminine touch.  This short sleeve tweed jacket is great with skinny pants (pictured), and a great alternative if you really want to wear pants but don’t want to look too casual.
