This week at Violet Revolution, we’re doing a special Q&A. While at the Evil Kitty Trunk Show this weekend (Click here to view the article and pic’s from the show!), I had a chance to ask Lidia about her view on fashion here in Chicago as well as her latest collection:
Q: What does fashion mean to you?
A: Fashion for me is the outlet I choose to express my creativity. I love designing for women who want to stand out in the crowd by wearing something unique and edgy. Fashion should always be about “trend-setting” not “trend following.” My goal is to one day become one of the international trendsetters in fashion and design.
Q: How would you define fashion in Chicago?
A: Chicago women are very aware of the world’s fashion and always keep up with the latest trends. However, many times they are afraid to go outside of the box. I want to encourage them to do so. Fashion should be about fun and expressing yourself.
Q: Why did you choose to start your line here in Chicago vs. another city?
A: I graduated from The School of The Art Institute of Chicago and started Evil Kitty right after graduation. The city provided countless opportunities for me to grow my line and become a better designer. I was one of the designers picked to participate in the Chicago Fashion Incubator in 2008. I was provided with a studio space and mentorship for the entire year. I was also picked to take part in a unique collaboration between a car manufacturer, Toyota, and 4 Chicago designers. This collaboration wouldn’t be possible without Mayor’s Fashion Council that was created in 2006. I still benefit from this connection. Last year Toyota opened a studio space for us and an exhibition room called “creative lounge CHICAGO” located in the heart of Wicker Park (1564 N. Damen, 3rd floor). They encourage us to let our creativity flourish there and to collaborate with other artist and designers.
Q: What inspired your latest collection?
A: My Spring/Summer collection blends classic and edgy elements of fashion. Many of my dresses are inspired by the silhouettes of the 40s, 50s or 60s. I made them contemporary by adding certain edgy elements. I use those a lot in my designs. They could be anything from vinyl appliques to zipper trims, safety pins, grommets etc. I tend to tie my collection together with color. This is very evident in the Spring/Summer line. I only used blue, turquoise blue and black tones to make all the pieces. Lucky for me blue is the official color of this Spring.
Q: What type of woman do you see wearing your latest collection?
A: A woman who likes to stand out and who likes to have fun.
Q: Where can we find your pieces currently in/around Chicago? If women wanted to purchase this latest collection, and missed the trunk show, where/how would be the best way for them to do so?
A: My collection is available at the “creative lounge CHICAGO” (1564 N. Damen, 3rd floor). Don’t hesitate to make an appointment, just email me at Lidia@evilkitty.net. You can also purchase my pieces by visiting my online store: www.evilkitty.net.
