Ask Violet Q & A

Q: I’m invited to a black-tie wedding, and am not quite sure what is appropriate to wear to it and what’s not.  Any advice?

A: Well for men, it’s usually mandatory to wear a tux with a black tie.  Some weddings will allow a black suit and black tie as an alternative, but you’d have to ask someone from the wedding you’re attending to be sure.  For women, usually a dressy cocktail dress or definitely a long gown are appropriate.  Some people even think short dresses aren’t appropriate for a black tie wedding, so be sure to consult with your bride or groom first, so you’re not the only one in a short dress.  There’s no need to skimp out on the sparkles, and when in doubt, err toward the dressier side vs. casual.
